Accessibility
An experience built to include everyone.
I want every visitor to be able to read, navigate, and contact me with ease. Accessibility is treated as part of the build, not an afterthought.
Conformance target
This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of abilities.
What I have done
- Keyboard navigation
- Every interactive element can be reached and operated with a keyboard. A skip-to-content link is the first focusable element on each page so keyboard and screen reader users can bypass the navigation.
- Visible focus
- Interactive elements show a clear focus outline when navigated by keyboard, so it is always obvious where you are on the page.
- Reduced motion
- All animation respects the prefers-reduced-motion setting. When reduced motion is preferred, entrances and transitions fall back to static states and the intro animation is skipped.
- Colour and contrast
- Text and interface colours are chosen to meet AA contrast. Ember is used as an accent rather than for body text on light backgrounds, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
- Text alternatives
- Meaningful images include descriptive alternative text, and decorative elements are hidden from assistive technology so they do not add noise.
- Structure and semantics
- Pages use headings, landmarks, and lists to describe their structure, which helps screen reader users move through content predictably.
- Responsive and zoom
- Layouts reflow without horizontal scrolling and stay usable when text is enlarged or the browser is zoomed.
- Accessibility preferences
- An Accessibility preferences button, fixed near the bottom-left of every page, lets you adjust motion, text size, contrast, reading spacing, and link underlines to suit how you read. These are presentation preferences on top of the accessibility work above, not a substitute for it.
Ongoing improvement
This website is actively maintained, and I continue to test and improve its accessibility. If you encounter a barrier or need information in another format, please contact me.
